Prepare to melt: we visited Fikelela Children’s Home as the kids unwrapped their presents from New Medians for Mandela Day.
Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to championing the rights of all South Africans, but one of his greatest passions was for the welfare of children, who he believed should be nurtured as future leaders.
So to celebrate his life and honour his legacy, it was fitting that on his birthday, Cape Town-based New Medians devoted their 67 minutes to children in need at Fikelela Children’s Home and SA Children’s Home.
Everyone donated winter clothes, toys and basic supplies, which we boxed and wrapped (in purple paper, of course). We also added hand-written messages of love and encouragement.
Then, NMtv’s Amanda Mtuli and Rory Fish went along to Fikelela to be there as the excited children unwrapped their presents. It was truly rewarding and inspiring to come together for this special cause that brought smiles to these children.
‘There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.’ – Nelson Mandela
‘Children are our greatest treasure. They are our future.’ – Nelson Mandela
