New rating functionality on Vodacom Rugby helped the site reach a massive 50 000 unique users in just one month. Rugby guru Tank Lanning talks us through Rate the Player.

The goal of reaching 50 000 unique users was set for much later in the season. ‘So to get there in just month one is exciting, and hopefully proof that our editorial plan is on track and resonating with rugby fans in SA,’ said Tank. Part of that success is due to the unique new functionality on the site – Rate the Player.

So what is Rate the Player?

It’s an easy-to-use consumer experience that allows users to rate the South African Vodacom Super Rugby players after every match they play.

Nuts and bolts: A section of Vodacom Rugby carries functionality that allows fans to rate the players using a simple slider next to the names of each player in the latest match. This individual rating is submitted to the site, creating an overall public rating of the players using an average of all individual player ratings.

678x330Comparison functionality: The aim was to generate not only dwell time on the site, but also cool sharable content. Users can compare ratings based on user registration data, using drop down menus at the top of each set of ratings. So, next to the team sheet sit two sets of ratings, defined by the heading chosen by the user from a drop down, which then filter the ratings accordingly. You can compare ratings from users based in Pretoria vs those in Cape Town; males vs females; over 50s vs under 50s – even Stormers vs Sharks fans.

Data: Built primarily as fun tool, it will also generate an excellent database rich in personal information, along with the player rating information that Vodacom and SARU might find useful.

Hook up with stats: The concept plays fantastically into the stats arena that Vodacom currently own. The Stats XV vs the public rating XV is the obvious one. But comparing the top and bottom rated players with their match stats would also make for compelling content.
